Swimming in the Pool of Gender Equality

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”That, according to the U.S. Dept. of Education, is known as Title IX. On June 23rd, 1979, then President Richard M. Nixon signed this bill into law as his contribution to bolster and ensure gender equality.According to History collection.com:“The NCAA, the organization that was created in 1906 to regulate collegiate athletics, had no championship structure for female sports, nor did it offer scholarships of any kind for women. To understand it better, the numbers prior to the passing of Title IX show a vast disparity in the number of women who played collegiate sports in 1972 compared to over 170,000 men. Title IX changed that completely. ”
