On February 1, 2025, The Soul of SF State, a dedicated student organization at San Francisco State University, revived Black Family Day, heralding Black History Month. Initiated in 1998 by Dr. Penny Saffold and the Black Student Union, this historic event fosters community unity while inspiring K-12 students to explore SFSU. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., families and faculty came together to honor Black Excellence amidst a vibrant atmosphere, complete with breakfast catered by Taqueria Girasol. The rain did not deter the festivities, with sorority members offering a thoughtfully designed campus tour. Various engaging activities for youth included science experiments by the BESTEM organization and a workshop for teens on healthy relationships.
The day concluded with a panel of influential Black leaders, enriching discussions around community engagement, and inspirational performances, encapsulating the essence of Black legacy and excellence.
