On Tuesday night, September 23, Pittsburgh’s Black community convened for the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh's annual gala, the "State of Black Pittsburgh," held on the 10th floor of The Pittsburgh Foundation's new headquarters. Over 200 attendees enjoyed views of the North Shore and PNC Park as interim President Esther Bush emphasized the significance of open dialogue among influential Black leaders. The event featured a range of panelists, including Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey and Dr. Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, who addressed alarming disparities in health outcomes for Black infants and mothers. Dr. Joe Trotter Jr. sparked interest discussing reparations for Black Pittsburghers, while Judge Kim Berkeley Clark urged increased voter participation for transformative change. Mayor Gainey advocated for collaborative efforts that empower the community economically. The gathering served as both a networking opportunity and a platform for candid conversations, reinforcing the need for unity in addressing systemic challenges facing the Black population in Pittsburgh.
