Background When the Israelites entered The Promised Land under Joshua, they were the “superpower” of their day. The Lord was with them because they were with the Lord. Over time, however, they became corrupt in the structure of their society and in their obedience to God. The Lord then left them vulnerable to the attacks of the many enemies that surrounded them. “Now on the seventh day of the fifth month, which was in the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,(586 BC)  Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard of the king, came to Jerusalem. He burned the house of the Lord, the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem; even every great house he burned with fire. So all the army who were with the captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem.
