For 32 years, I dedicated myself to teaching, initially believing that teachers’ unions represented both students and educators like myself. Somewhere along this journey, I recognized a shift—from enhancing educational environments to becoming entangled in politics. This realization compelled me to resign.Reflecting on my career, which commenced in Texas during the early 1990s with an annual salary of $18,000, I faced considerable financial challenges. Despite pressure to join the teachers’ union, I opted out initially due to dues I could not afford.Upon relocating to Colorado, I joined for anticipated job protection. Historically, unions like the NEA and AFT have shaped American education. However, I witnessed a drift toward political activism, overshadowing essential educational priorities.Disillusionment intensified during the pandemic and the increased political engagement I observed. While once feeling part of a community, I grew concerned with union politics overshadowing our core mission—educational excellence. In 2023, I left the union, redirecting my focus on students and families.
