Thousands March In Sacramento To Honor MLK’s Legacy

Hansen | OBSERVER Staff WriterMore than 2,000 people gathered Monday in Land Park to celebrate and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 43rd annual March for the Dream.The event showcased Sacramento’s diversity, bringing together people from all ethnicities, backgrounds, ages and walks of life to commemorate the late civil rights leader. Flags calling for a free Palestine waved alongside Black Lives Matter flags, as elected officials and Sacramento’s police chief joined the marchers.Sam Starks, founder of MLK365 and organizer of the march, expressed gratitude for the event’s growing attendance, which is returning to pre-COVID levels.“I’m used to seeing this kind of diversity,” Starks said. “The March for the Dream has always held a special place in the hearts of people – not just Black people, but individuals from all backgrounds.”Despite the joyful atmosphere, the day also served as a reminder of unfinished work. The march coincided with MLK Day and the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump, underscoring the ongoing challenges in achieving Dr. King’s vision.
