Three More Saint Lucian Athletes Earn US Scholarships

Three Saint Lucian track and field athletes recently travelled to the United States to join the ranks of student-athletes on scholarship at universities and colleges in North America.  Ishmael Durand, Shamael Durand, and Rayshawn Harris are all members of Vieux Fort’s Pacesetters Club. Harris will be linking up with four Saint Lucian athletes, two of them also members of his club, at Coppin State University. As a member of the Eagles, he will compete in the men’s 800m, an event in which he represented Saint Lucia at the 2024 CARIFTA Games in Grenada. Asa Francis and Kimani Alphonse are also at Coppin. They returned to the USA with Harris. The school has produced a number of outstanding Saint Lucian athletes over the years. Carl Drakes and Jayeed Norbal are also student-athletes at Coppin. The Durand boys, meanwhile, will be attending Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas. A member of the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU), Paul Quinn College competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Red River Athletic Conference. Although the Durands began as track athletes, they have been developing as throwers over the last two years. Saint Lucia has not produced many collegiate athletes...
