Shortly after 6 a.m., on Friday, December 27, well-known Trinidadian steelpan player Joshua Regrello embarked on a mission to secure a Guinness World Record. Regrello, 27, is aiming to become the world’s longest marathon-playing steelpan artist.
His performance is being broadcast live on social media from the WACK Radio studios in San Fernando, Trinidad, where officials from the T&T Police Service, Fire Service, and timekeepers from the T&T Football Federation are monitoring his progress.
Regrello kicked off his marathon by playing Josh Groban’s You Raise Me Up in his attempt to break the 30-hour world record. He is allowed a five-minute break for every hour of continuous playing.
Inviting fans to follow on his social media platforms, Regrello, who has a huge following on TikTok, wrote on his Facebook page: “Let’s make history: together, we’ll set the Guinness World Record for longest marathon playing steelpan.”
Regrello hopes his effort will inspire young people, demonstrating that a successful career in music is achievable.
