President Donald Trump has mandated the Department of Commerce to initiate a new U.S. census that excludes undocumented individuals, according to Newsweek. On August 7, Trump declared on his Truth Social platform, "I have directed our Department of Commerce to commence work on a new, highly accurate CENSUS based on contemporary facts and figures, and importantly, using data from the Presidential Election of 2024. Individuals residing in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS."Traditionally, the census compiles data on all residents, irrespective of citizenship or immigration status, for congressional apportionment. Trump's initiative could dramatically alter the political terrain, particularly in immigrant-dense regions like California, New York, and Texas. His request aligns with Republican efforts in Texas, where redistricting could potentially yield five additional GOP seats. Previous attempts to implement this census policy in 2020 faced judicial obstacles, and pertinent legal challenges may arise again, as highlighted by Jeffrey Wice, a senior fellow at New York Law School.
