T&T Energy Minister to Succeed Rowley As Prime Minister

Trinidad and Tobago’s 49-year-old Energy Minister Stuart Young is set to become the twin-island republic’s new prime minister. Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, who a few days ago announced his intention to resign before the end of his government’s term, said on Monday that the parliamentary caucus of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) has thrown its support behind Young to lead the party. “We are very pleased to announce that the promise of a smooth transition is going according to plan,” the prime minister told reporters. He said he will indicate his actual date of departure from the post sometime after the next meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government in Barbados next month, which he will attend. Young, an attorney-at-law by profession, is the MP for Port-of-Spain North/St Ann’s West.
