Two African American Scholars Announce Their Retirements From Indiana Universities

Charles Sykes has announced his retirement as executive director of the African American Arts Institute at Indiana University after over three decades of service. In addition to his leadership position, he currently serves as a faculty member in the African American and African diaspora studies department, as well as the folklore and ethnomusicology department. He also holds an appointment as a research associate with the Archives of African American Music and Culture. Dr. Sykes is a graduate of historically Black Florida A&M University. He received his master’s degree and doctorate in music education from Indiana University. Willie Reed, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University, has announced his plans to retire at the end of this academic year. Dr. Reed began his career in higher education as an assistant professor of veterinary pathology and diagnostician in the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University. He left the university in 1990 to serve as a full professor and director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Michigan State University. He returned to Purdue University as dean in 2007.
