(Special to The Dallas Examiner) – Across North Texas, more families are feeling the pinch – whether it’s the rising cost of groceries, reduced food benefits or unexpected hardships. That’s why UNT Dallas’ partnership with the North Texas Food Bank to host monthly drive-thru food pantries is more important than ever. This month’s event is on April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon (or while supplies last), providing free, nourishing food to any community member in need.At last month’s event, UNT Dallas distributed approximately 23,000 pounds of food to more than 1,100 people, a powerful reflection of how many people continue to rely on this support. That’s in addition to the more than 566,000 pounds of food distributed to nearly 18,000 people in 2024.Access to food remains a pressing challenge across the region. According to the North Texas Food Bank, 1 in 6 children in North Texas lives in a household without reliable access to nutritious meals. Statewide, nearly 5.1 million Texans are affected, placing Texas second in the nation for food insecurity, according to the USDA.The UNT Dallas mobile food pantry program started five years ago during the pandemic and has continued monthly to help students and the community....
