UPMC Aims to Improve Black Maternal Health Care – UPMC & Pitt Health Sciences News Blog

Every year, Black Maternal Health week is held from April 11th to April 17th. In recognition of this week, in April 2024, UPMC held a Birthing While Black Community Listening Session for community members and patients, as well as a Mommy & Me Expo at the UPMC Health Plan Neighborhood Center in East Liberty. Pennsylvania’s Department of Health’s most recent 2021 report found that the pregnancy-associated mortality ratio among black women was higher in the state than the national average, at 82 deaths per 100,000 live births. Three UPMC maternal healthcare experts, Vivian Petticord, DNP, RNC, CNL, Sharee Livingston, DO, and Memourie Cunningham gave insight to how UPMC is examining social determinants of health and creating change internally and externally to lower the maternal mortality rate among Black families.
