As we revert back, the encroaching season of darkness looms larger than ever, presenting a uniquely existential challenge. Observing my students over the course of 2025, I’ve noticed this pervasive gloom, often described as a choking despair, with many expressing a longing to retreat under their blankets daily. What guidance can I offer? I urge them to delve into history, seeking its profound lessons. The tumultuous 20s often precede brighter 70s; thus, we must strive to maintain democratic ideals for a promising future in the 2070s. History is a steadfast mentor. My lineage has chronicled 400 years, highlighting inherent cyclical patterns. From the 1620s initiation of the slave trade to pivotal moments in subsequent decades, my ancestors faced trials yet rose to contribute to frameworks of freedom and equality. Today, as we grapple with rising nativism and threats to democratic values, it’s crucial for youth to channel the resilience exemplified by ancestors, ensuring democracy’s endurance and our nation’s rejuvenation.
