Detroit Seniors Gain 105 New Homes As $29.3M Project Officially Opens

Detroit's historic landscape has been revitalized with the inauguration of the Dr. Violet T. Lewis Village, a $29.3 million affordable senior housing initiative offering over 100 income-restricted apartments on the former site of Michigan's sole Historically Black College and University. This development occupies the past grounds of the Lewis College of Business, established by Dr. Violet T. Lewis, which served countless Black students pursuing business and clerical education during times of restricted access.City and state dignitaries, along with the Lewis family, celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor Mike Duggan remarked on the site's historical significance and the preservation of Dr. Lewis' legacy through this vital community project. The development combines restoration of two historic buildings with the construction of a new four-story structure. All apartments are designated for seniors with incomes between 30% and 80% of the area median income, ensuring affordability. Community amenities include on-site management, a fitness area, and computer access, enhancing residents' quality of life.
