A 5-year-old girl was shot and killed early Sunday morning on the West Side, according to police.
The incident occurred around 3:32 a.m. in the 200-block of South Campbell Avenue near Jackson, in the Near West Side neighborhood.
Police reported that a group of people were standing outside when shots were fired.
The girl, identified as Reign Ware by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, was inside a parked car when she was hit in the abdomen. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.
A 24-year-old man, who was also shot in the thigh, was taken to the hospital in good condition. After it was initially reported that Ware’s father was the man that was hit, subsequent reports say that he was unharmed.&
A GoFundMe campaign was launched to cover Reign’s funeral expenses.
“It has broken our hearts completely,” Reign’s mother Raven Adams wrote on the campaign’s page. “Her 9-year-old sister is devastated.”
ABC 7 Chicago contributed to this report.&
