Fifty cities from 33 nations have been selected as global finalists in the ongoing Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge. Each city receives $50,000 to develop innovative, resident-focused ideas that address pressing urban challenges. In January 2026, 25 of these cities will be awarded $1 million each, along with additional support to implement their solutions. Now in its sixth cycle, the Mayors Challenge epitomizes Bloomberg Philanthropies' commitment to fostering innovation in local governance. Over 630 cities participated this round, representing more than 80 million residents. Proposals prioritize expanding green areas, enhancing youth safety, minimizing energy expenses, and leveraging artificial intelligence for better city services. James Anderson, head of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Government Innovation program, noted the importance of practical solutions amid real-world constraints. Each finalist will partake in an Ideas Camp in July, refining their strategies with expert guidance.
