A well-known Black composer and musician has spoken out against the Kennedy Center’s newly appointed executive director, chosen by President Donald Trump, claiming that a group of MAGA supporters intentionally disrupted her performance. Yasmin Williams, an acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist, showcased her talents at the Millennium Stage on September 18, a venue that typically hosts free performances requiring tickets. Before her set, the audience heard a brief Malcolm X speech. Williams expressed her hesitation to perform, citing recent administrative changes, notably Trump's self-appointment as board chairman and the appointment of interim president Richard Grenell. “I opted to perform to honor those who contributed to the Kennedy Center’s esteemed reputation, which has regrettably been tainted by Trump’s regime,” she stated. She openly criticized the new board and Grenell. Williams later revealed through Instagram that hecklers were members of the Log Cabin Republicans, who had reserved tickets, leading her to feel intimidated during her show. She ultimately condemned the disruptions and reiterated her stance against harassment in any form. (Photo: YouTube screenshot/The Kennedy Center)
