Researchers Discover Cannabis-Based Drug Relieves Back Pain

An innovative cannabis-derived medication has proven effective in alleviating back pain, according to a recent study involving 800 participants conducted by a German pharmaceutical firm. This research adds to the growing body of evidence supporting cannabis's therapeutic potential for chronic pain, despite its illegal status under federal law in the U.S., where numerous states have embraced it for medical and recreational purposes. Canadian and European health authorities previously endorsed a pharmaceutical-grade cannabis treatment for various pain types, including neuropathic pain linked to multiple sclerosis. Unlike the FDA-approved CBD product Epidiolex, this new formula contains THC at minimal levels, presenting a microdose in comparison to popular edibles. Patients reported approximately a 2-point reduction in pain after 12 weeks on the medication, alongside improvements in sleep and physical function. While side effects were noted, including dizziness and fatigue, they resulted in a lower dropout rate than often seen with opioids. Vertanical aims to secure regulatory approval for its drug in Europe and is actively collaborating with U.S. authorities.
