Celebrating a Legacy: Birmingham Honors the Impact of Bishop Calvin Woods Sr.

Bishop Calvin Wallace Woods Sr. was honored on Saturday, August 23, as a stalwart advocate for justice whose ministry transcended the pulpit. A prominent figure in Birmingham’s Civil Rights Movement, he worked alongside legendary leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and remained passionate until his passing on August 15 at 91. He would have celebrated his 92nd birthday on September 13. The Celebration of Life at Sardis Baptist Church filled with family, community leaders, and over 100 clergy members reflected his influence. During the service, his son, Dr. Timothy Justice Woods Sr., emphasized that his father's unwavering fight for justice stemmed from a profound relationship with God. Bishop Woods co-founded the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights in 1956 and was pivotal in numerous protests, enduring physical hardships and arrests for his activism. His legacy and light will continue to inspire future generations, with community members reaffirming their commitment to uphold his spirit of freedom and justice.
