A junior varsity football player from a Michigan high school is recovering from a fractured spine incurred when an opponent jumped on him during a play. The incident transpired in the third quarter of the JV match between Lakeshore High School and Kalamazoo Central High School on September 18 in Stevensville. Captured on video by the injured player's mother, the clip has since gained significant attention. It shows a Lakeshore player, already tackled, being leaped upon by a Kalamazoo Central player.
Courtney Mims, the mother of the injured athlete, reported that her son was hospitalized and diagnosed with two spinal fractures. She expressed her shock, stating, “I immediately rushed to the scene upon realizing it was my son. I’ve never felt such distress.” She noted, “He’s sidelined for at least this season, and while we hope for a complete recovery, his future in the sport remains uncertain.”
Kalamazoo Central High School's administration issued a statement indicating that the perpetrating student acted impulsively, influenced by a social media video unrelated to the school’s football program or ethos.
