June 19, recognized as Juneteenth, holds great historical importance as it commemorates the conclusion of slavery in the United States, occurring two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Historically celebrated as “Emancipation Day” or “Freedom Day,” it remains the earliest known observance of slavery's end in the U.S. In 2021, this day was officially designated a federal holiday by Congress and President Joe Biden through the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. Food plays a crucial role in honoring this milestone. In Sacramento, I’ve selected a few notable Black-owned and soul food restaurants to visit.
