Honoring Fallen Journalists: A Vigil at Freedom Park for Gaza Conflict Victims

On Saturday evening, a poignant vigil was held at Freedom Park to commemorate the over 200 journalists and media personnel who tragically lost their lives while reporting on the Gaza conflict. Attendees arrived dressed predominantly in black, with many bringing flowers to honor the fallen. Names on sheets displayed included both local and international reporters, such as Assen Kamal Moussa and Yahya Munir Asaad Subeih, whose identities may not be widely recognized but whose sacrifices resonate deeply within the journalistic community. Amid ongoing global headlines, these courageous individuals remain etched in the hearts of their fellow journalists. Independent journalist Fiza Pirani, one of the speakers, expressed, “You only target and kill journalists when your enemy is the truth.” Together, speakers, including Adam Horowitz from Mondoweiss, recited all 274 names of the deceased. Emotions ran high as attendees comforted one another, capturing the solemn event on social media, while symbols of peace and solidarity were prominently displayed amidst the rain that graced the night.
