The Environmental Charter School (ECS) empowers students to act as catalysts for change in the natural, built, and social environments and become active, engaged, and empathetic citizens in their communities. By combining the academic rigor of the best public schools with a hands-on learning approach, ECS students think critically and make a meaningful impact on the world around them.
ECS is a tuition-free, public K–12 School District in Pittsburgh’s East End and believes that the classroom is one of many learning environments. Through out-the-door education and unique course offerings, ECSers learn through age-appropriate learning targets at each stop on their K–12 academic journeys: Play (K–2), Curiosity (3–5), Agency (6–8), and Advocacy (9–12).
With an average student-to-staff ratio of 12:1, ECS meets students where they are to provide individualized programming from special education to gifted services. ECS is committed to whole-child development by supporting students beyond the classroom with a diverse out-of-school time program that provides the opportunity to explore interests through clubs and athletics. ECS’s dedicated staff keeps students healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged with a school counselor, school social worker, and health office nurse in each building.
Together, ECS adults build a vibrant culture and a holistic perspective...
