Milwaukee Dad Voices Anger After Alleged Discrimination Against His Son by Bus Driver

A Milwaukee father shared his distressing experience involving a bus driver who allegedly discriminated against his wheelchair-bound son, denying him access because it would delay her schedule. Deshaunte Smith recounted this incident on TikTok after missing the school bus while accompanying his son, DJ, to school. As Smith sought alternative transportation via the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS), he encountered the bus driver, who expressed concern over the delay caused by assisting his son. Smith approached her to verify the route, but her dismissiveness was disheartening; she closed the door in their faces, stating they would make her late. Despite the ensuing awkwardness when she had to remain at the stop, the next driver welcomed them warmly, apologizing for the prior encounter and affirming proper assistance protocols for wheelchair users. Smith intends to report the incident, which he believes violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. MCTS is currently investigating the matter. Smith emphasized the need for compassion rather than viewing his family as burdens.
