Founded in 1974 by Dr. Harry Robinson Jr., the African American Museum of Dallas originally operated as a branch of Bishop College, a historically Black college in Marshall. It made its move to Dallas on November 13, 1993, quickly establishing itself as an essential cultural institution within the city. Conveniently located in Fair Park, it is distinguished as the sole museum in the Southwestern United States dedicated to the acquisition, conservation, and presentation of African American artistic, cultural, and historical artifacts that embody the African American experience. To ensure the protection and digitization of its exceptional collection, the museum has secured a $3 million grant from the Texas Historical Commission, with additional support from Google.“This funding goes beyond mere preservation,” stated Margie Johnson Reese, MFA, chief program officer. “Our goal is to make history widely accessible. Partnering with the Texas Historical Commission and Google reinforces our commitment to safeguarding invaluable works for future generations.” This initiative not only enhances accessibility but also strengthens the museum's vital educational mission.
