On June 6, the Governing Board of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) rejected two proposed regulations aimed at banning gas heaters and furnaces in Southern California, a decision with significant implications statewide. The board voted 7-5 during a session held in Diamond Bar, opting not to revise Rules 1111 and 1121, which would have impacted approximately 17 million residents by mandating a shift to electric alternatives. SCAQMD board member Carlos Rodriguez emphasized the need to move forward after a six-month deliberation. Although County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell backed the amendments, she acknowledged the necessity of compromise in policymaking. Just prior to the vote, gubernatorial candidate Antonio Villaraigosa voiced opposition to the rules, arguing they unfairly burden working families. Critics assert such regulations could escalate costs for homeowners and renters, while proponents believe they essential for mitigating nitrogen oxide emissions for improved air quality.
