A California police officer, previously accused of disseminating racist and homophobic messages that emerged in 2015, has been permanently barred from serving as an officer in the state. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the California Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) officially revoked former San Francisco police officer Michael Celis's certification.Celis participated in a group of officers exchanging numerous texts rife with racist remarks and slurs targeting Black, Hispanic, and LGBTQ+ communities. The fallout followed a federal fraud probe involving ex-sergeant Ian Furminger, uncovering thousands of derogatory texts exchanged among various officers and civilians, which belittled marginalized groups. The POST commission, citing compelling evidence of Celis’s unequivocally offensive communications, determined he was unfit for fair law enforcement. Without appealing the finding, Celis faced a default revocation. Three of Celis's colleagues also relinquished their credentials amid the controversy, while others were found unsuitable due to additional criminal convictions.
