(NNPA) – President Donald Trump’s housing strategy is poised to become both a financial and humanitarian catastrophe. If political leaders fail to respond promptly, the ramifications may be irreversible. Housing policies were already failing long before Trump assumed office. Rather than addressing foundational issues, such as the ongoing lack of Section 8 vouchers and affordable housing, some policymakers are pointing fingers at tools like rent-pricing software, which merely reflect market realities. In a recent move, Democratic Governor Jared Polis vetoed a bill aiming to ban such technology, making it clear that addressing affordability requires increasing housing supply, not targeting the tools that report on it. Unfortunately, Trump appears oblivious to these issues, worsening the flawed housing system. His protectionist policies have inflated lumber prices and targeted immigrant labor, critical to construction. Furthermore, his consideration of taking Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac public again risks repeating the past housing crisis. To avert further disaster, policymakers from all political affiliations must prioritize housing development—moving beyond simple fixes towards an expansive housing agenda that addresses the needs of working families.
