Can electric vehicles navigate Saint Lucia’s rugged terrain? This question has captivated both auto enthusiasts and prospective buyers. Key concerns include steep inclines that demand additional power, resulting in faster battery depletion, and frequent ascents impacting an EV’s range—highlighting the importance of meticulous route planning.
To explore these matters, St. Lucia Times consulted Neron Joseph, brand manager for Audi and BYD at JQ Motors. Joseph recognized that overheating is a legitimate issue but reassured that the latest models his dealership provides are designed to mitigate it.
“One major worry among locals is the heat here in Saint Lucia,” he emphasized. “We ensure that all vehicles have integrated active and passive cooling systems within the batteries, addressing heat management effectively.” He remarked that earlier EV models faced swift battery degradation, affecting their longevity. However, newer variations, equipped with advanced cooling technologies, exhibit improved performance.
In December 2024, LUCELEC initiated an EV charger network across the island, promoting sustainable transportation. Yet, additional infrastructure, particularly fast chargers, is essential to foster greater adoption. Joseph urged the government to implement incentives to hasten this transition, acknowledging that the initial cost of fast chargers would be steeper.
