On Tuesday, the Birmingham City Council sanctioned $170,000 to fund a fresh exhibit and educational initiatives at the McWane Science Center. “Behind me is our ‘Making Moves Experience,’” noted Annie Strong, the center’s creative director. “This will be a part of the ‘Dropping Science’ exhibit, which centers on the integration of STEM education and hip-hop, exploring the scientific principles involved.” Strong confirmed that students from Birmingham City Schools will have complimentary access to the new exhibit. “Our program, ‘McWane for All,’ allows Title I schools to engage with our offerings at no cost,” she explained, highlighting Birmingham City Schools' inclusion. Council President Darrell O’Quinn emphasized the significance of this investment in innovative projects that enrich educational opportunities for local students. Ingrid Smiley, a grandmother of a 7-year-old in the city’s school system, expressed her enthusiasm, believing this initiative will ignite students' passion for learning. While the precise opening date for the “Dropping Science” exhibit remains unclear, it is anticipated to launch by year-end.
