When Tyrone Green’s youngest son was diagnosed with autism, his wife quickly sought the necessary support for their 3-year-old. However, Green felt isolated, grappling with his own uncertainties and a profound sense of loneliness. “My wife couldn’t understand my experience as a Black father, all the aspirations I held for my child,” he expressed, residing in Michigan. In 2021, he joined a support group for Black fathers, discovering a community of dads discussing their specific challenges. In 2023, they launched the podcast AutisHIM, focusing on both triumphs and challenges of parenting autistic children. Green is among an increasing number of Black fathers seeking visibility in the autism dialogue through various platforms. Their aim is to reshape perceptions, advocating for increased acceptance and timely support for their children’s needs. While federal initiatives examine autism causes, experts stress the importance of sharing diverse experiences, as many individuals with autism thrive, challenging damaging narratives surrounding their potential.
