During a recent community breakfast in Fort Bend County, Justice of the Peace Roderick Garner became emotional while discussing the challenges of caring for his elderly parents, LaVoice and Horace Garner.Garner expressed, “Caring for your parents is difficult. They’re always looking after you.”In addition to supporting his parents, Garner dedicates time to his daughter and grandchildren. After the tragic passing of his son, Roderick Jr., last November, he continues to impact his Fort Bend community, embodying the dedication of many present Black fathers.Research shows that Black dads, irrespective of marital status, are often as involved—if not more—in their children's lives compared to fathers from other ethnicities. Yet, misconceptions fueled by certain media and pop culture endure.Fatherhood, as demonstrated by figures like Graham and Christopher Parker, emphasizes joy, responsibility, and unwavering presence, fostering success both at home and in wider communities.
