Black maternal health is finally receiving the attention it urgently requires. Alarmingly, Black women in the U.S. face a threefold higher risk of death from pregnancy-related complications than their White counterparts, regardless of socioeconomic factors, as reported by the CDC. For instance, in 2021, Black women experienced a maternal mortality rate of 69.9 per 100,000 live births, nearly triple that of White women. The tragic case of Arika Trim—a college graduate who died a week post-emergency C-section—highlights this crisis. In her honor, the Arika Trim Foundation promotes postpartum care and awareness. This April, events during Black Maternal Health Week included a significant conference in Pittsburgh, emphasizing community efforts to improve outcomes and address the preventable nature of many pregnancy-related deaths. Activists and officials unite, advocating for systematic change.
