The family of a North Carolina college student, who tragically lost her life due to gun violence at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, believes that law enforcement’s inaction on her past abuse reports contributed to her death. On August 11, London Powers, a 21-year-old student at North Carolina Central University, was shot by 23-year-old Damien Tinsley at the Camden Pointe apartments in Durham. According to officials, Tinsley succumbed to a self-inflicted wound at the scene. Powers was rushed to a hospital but was later declared dead.Witness Shiann Boyd recounts that Powers was attempting to relocate when Tinsley confronted her. “She mentioned her address and said he had a gun,” Boyd stated. Following the shooting, Boyd frantically contacted police for help. Powers’ mother, Tia, lamented that previous police calls about Tinsley’s threats should have prompted immediate intervention. The university honored London as a dedicated student poised to make a significant impact in social work.
