The hip-hop dance craze that began in the Bronx in the 1970s is making an impact worldwide, including in the Hudson Valley with the establishment of a “Breaking League” in the Yonkers Public School District.
As competitive breakdancers prepare to show off their moves at the 2024 Paris Olympics, more than 300 competitors strutted their stuff Saturday at the Battle of the Boroughs event at Montessori School 27.
Yonkers hip-hop legend London Reyes, of the New York City Breakers said, “People come from all over, including the Bronx, Yonkers and even different countries, to celebrate each other through the dancing and the music.”
Cash prizes totaling $3,000 were awarded to the winners of the competition.
