Catherine Edmonds has been selected to serve as interim chancellor of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. She succeeds former chancellor Karrie Dixon, who was recently appointed chancellor of North Carolina Central University. Elizabeth City State University enrolls about 2,000 undergraduate students and roughly 100 graduate students. Black students represent 69 percent of the undergraduate student body. For the past two years, Dr. Edmonds has served as chief of staff at North Carolina Central University. She has extensive experience in North Carolina education, in both K-12 and university settings. Previously, she had stints as superintendent of Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools and Bertie County Schools. She has held several positions with the North Carolina Department of Public Instructions, including deputy state superintendent. Additionally, she previously served as state director of the North Carolina Principal Fellows Program and director of educational leadership and development for the University of North Carolina System. Dr. Edmonds is a first-generation college graduate, having received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from historically Black North Carolina A&T State University. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and a doctorate in educational administration from North Carolina State University.
