ANN ARBOR, MI — During the 1950s, Fourth Avenue and Ann Street thrived with lively Black-owned enterprises, now lost to time. Yet, every June's first Saturday, the Black community convenes at this intersection to honor Ann Arbor’s heritage during its 28th Annual African American Festival, as stated by Event Organizer Teesha Montague. "We aim to instill pride in young African Americans about their rich history and contributions to our city," Montague expressed. Established in the mid-1990s by nonprofit leader Lucille Porter, this celebration fosters awareness of Black history. Scheduled from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 7, this festival, featuring food vendors and activities for children, promotes unity and inclusivity. Montague anticipates a spirited gathering celebrating African American accomplishments.
