Douglas Carter, OBSERVER Celebration Arts, Sacramento’s premiere Black Theater, proudly kicks off its “Black Girl Magic”-themed season with a mesmerizing ensemble presentation of “For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide when the Rainbow is Enuf,” by the renowned playwright Ntozake Shange. This season is a dedicated celebration of Black women in the arts, showcasing plays either written by, performed by, or portraying the real stories and experiences of Black women. The grand opening Feb. 2 at the Guild Theater put out a red carpet that drew the Sacramento Black community together, filling the theater with an eager audience. The choreographed poem, “For Colored Girls,” gracefully unfolds the lives of seven distinct Black women: Lady in Red, Lady in Blue, Lady in Purple, Lady in Yellow, Lady in Brown, Lady in Green, and Lady in Orange. They live in metropolitan cities across the United States. The play is directed by Voress Franklin, a seasoned professional with more than 50 years of acting and directing experience.
