In 2020, Cherith Glover Fluker began chronicling her travels throughout Alabama, exploring destinations like Gulf Shores, Muscle Shoals, and Huntsville. As her adventures extended throughout the South, her storytelling aspirations evolved. Recognizing a gap, Fluker aimed to spotlight Birmingham, a city where she engaged in public service through her sorority, the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and participated on the board of the Greater Birmingham Auburn Club. She proposed her idea to a publisher, culminating in “Secret Birmingham: A Guide to The Weird, Wonderful and Obscure.” This book unveils both popular and lesser-known spots, including Oak Hill Cemetery, founded in 1871, which serves as a historic landmark for many, including civil rights figure Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. Fluker dedicated a year to researching and crafting her narrative, which debuted on August 1. She plans to host book signings at featured locations this fall.
