Unsettling reports indicate the presence of 'Frankenstein' rabbits with tentacle-like appendages in various regions across the United States. Officials in Colorado are advising the public to maintain a safe distance and refrain from interacting with these peculiar creatures. The term ‘Frankenstein’ is derived from the unusual transformations these rabbits have undergone due to an alarming condition.Back in 2024, a local resident shared a photo showcasing a rabbit adorned with black, spike-like structures on its head. Susan Mansfield recounted a recent sighting of a rabbit exhibiting quills around its mouth, stating, “I presumed it would perish during winter, yet it returned the following year — and it grew.” These rabbits are afflicted with the cottontail papilloma virus (CRPV), which results in growths on or around the head. Although the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) suggests the virus is not harmful to humans or pets, caution is advised. Avoiding direct contact with these rabbits remains essential to safeguard oneself and assist these unique animals responsibly.
