Hansen | OBSERVER Staff ReporterAssemblymember Kevin McCarty leads Dr. Flojaune Cofer by 10 points in the race for Sacramento’s next mayor.As of 2 a.m. Wednesday with approximately 32% of ballots counted, McCarty leads 55% to Cofer’s 45%. McCarty has received more than 46,000 votes and Cofer about 37,500, according to county election results.“The night’s still young, but we’re here,” McCarty told several hundred supporters at Cafeteria 15L in downtown Sacramento, including labor union leaders, law enforcement, and city officials. “It took all of you,” McCarty said. He added, however, that it’s too early to celebrate.Updated results will be available at 4:15 p.m. Friday.Cofer and McCarty have actively debated their stances on key issues such as homelessness, public safety, and rent control, reflecting contrasting visions for the city’s future.Cofer, an epidemiologist and activist, has emphasized a progressive approach, advocating for reallocating funding from unfilled police positions to preventive and social programs. She proposes creating safe outdoor spaces for homeless residents on vacant parcels, although she clarified she is not specifically advocating for homeless encampments in popular parks, as opponents have suggested.
