Born David Khari Webber Chappelle on August 24, 1973, in Washington, D.C., he was raised in a politically and socially aware family. His father, William David Chappelle III, was a professor of vocal performance, and his mother, Yvonne Seon, worked as a professor and later as a Unitarian Universalist minister.
