Democrats Challenge Braun: Reject Beckwith’s Three-Fifths Rhetoric

Indiana Democrats are urging Governor Mike Braun to formally reject Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith’s remarks praising the Three-Fifths Compromise. This 1787 constitutional clause dehumanized enslaved individuals. Following Beckwith’s comments, which received backlash from civil rights organizations, party Chair Karen Tallian emphasized Braun's inadequate response. “The governor must assert justice,” she insisted, demanding a definitive condemnation. As Beckwith stands by his statement, Democrats insist no Hoosier should feel diminished as ‘three-fifths’ of a person. As of now, Braun hasn’t responded to these renewed calls.
