Young Designer From Detroit Sees Her Float Come Alive For America’s Thanksgiving Parade

A fifth-grade student from Detroit is set to realize her dream in an extraordinary way. Lyric Weathers, enrolled at Schulze Academy for Technology & Arts, has triumphed in The Skillman Foundation’s 34th Float Design Contest. Her creation, titled “Cultures are Around the World,” will debut as a magnificent float during the 99th America’s Thanksgiving Parade® presented by Gardner White on November 27. This float, drawn from her original artwork, will grace the parade in front of thousands of spectators and millions of viewers nationwide.The contest engaged students from grades 4 to 8 across Detroit's public and charter institutions, challenging them to express the theme “My Dream for the World.” Lyric's design stood out among many for its vibrant representation of cultural harmony. Beyond her achievement, five additional Honorable Mention winners will have their designs showcased on Lyric’s float, honoring their artistic endeavors. This celebration of creativity powerfully embodies the essence of community and youth leadership in Detroit.
