As I review the actions of our appellate courts and the U.S. Supreme Court, I often find myself questioning the paths we have to pursue justice when lower court rulings appear unjust. The recent dismissal by the Georgia Supreme Court of District Attorney Fani Willis’ appeal concerning Trump indicates a glaring error in judgment. It is perplexing that the court overlooked Trump's unmistakable wrongdoing, depriving Willis of the opportunity to manage a case involving evident electoral malfeasance. How does this reflect on our justice system's treatment of people of color? In the past, we could count on escalating cases to higher courts, a notion that now seems obsolete given the current court's pattern of injustice. While justices Kagan, Sotomayor, and Jackson provide some relief, the right-wing majority consistently undermines the Constitution. Trump's blatant disregard for the law is alarming, especially when contrasted with the lenience displayed towards white males in similar situations, highlighting a distressing double standard in our legal system.
