I was encouraged by Maryland Governor Wes Moore's recent executive order implementing a cohesive strategy for environmental justice. This executive order also established an Interagency Environmental Justice and Equity Advisory Council, designed to streamline governmental initiatives and enhance funding access. Recognizing that genuine environmental justice intersects with various issues, the order tackles the disproportionate effects of climate change on vulnerable communities. Those least accountable for the climate crisis, often predominantly Black and Brown individuals in the Global South, are primarily affected. Climate justice is fundamentally intertwined with racial justice, as data shows African Americans face heightened risks from severe weather and pollution-related health issues. Furthermore, these communities are more susceptible to displacement during weather emergencies. Governor Moore’s executive order is a pivotal move toward rectifying historical injustices in environmental matters, though it could be amplified by linking it to a wider reparations initiative. Addressing systemic racism is essential for achieving true environmental justice.
