Uncertain Future for Black Maternal Health Initiatives Due to Federal Budget Cuts

Eboni Tomasek anticipated bringing her newborn home the day after birth at a San Jose hospital but faced unexplained delays. Hospital staff cited jaundice concerns, which later proved unfounded. Frustrated, Tomasek reached out to her caseworker for support, underscoring the vital role of Santa Clara County’s Black Infant Health program in addressing maternal health disparities amidst growing challenges from federal policies. With over 14,000 families served since 2000, the program has significantly improved outcomes for Black mothers and infants despite looming funding uncertainties.
