The familiar jest about Hallmark creating holidays to boost greeting card sales resonates amid the modern explosion of “holy days.” While I may be biased as a father, I truly believe Father’s Day was divinely inspired, given that God is our ultimate paternal figure. Dads often face underappreciation for their efforts; as Rodney Dangerfield humorously noted, fathers frequently “get no respect.” This sentiment is highlighted by how effortlessly reservations can be found for Father’s Day compared to the long waits experienced on Mother’s Day. Father’s Day was conceived by Sonora Smart Dodd, who sought to honor her father, raising his children after the loss of his wife. She organized the first celebration on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Though initially met with resistance, Dodd persevered, leading to recognition of the holiday in 1972. Organizations like Fathers and Families Center are vital in advocating for fathers' growth. As societal views shift, the essence of fatherhood endures in being present and supportive. Happy Father’s Day to those dedicated to this noble role. Larry Smith is a community leader. Contact him at larry@leaf-llc.com.
