Josh Vasa understood the enormity of his task in Tuesday’s District 3 Birmingham City Council elections, succeeding Valerie Abbott, who resigned after an impressive six terms. “Abbott dedicated nearly 24 years and attended almost every council meeting,” Vasa remarked. He secured a remarkable 2,922 votes, representing 83.8 percent of the total against his opponent Ryan Jones. “The community embraced my candidacy largely due to Abbott's endorsement, which signified continuity and established trust,” he noted. Vasa, serving as Chief Operating Officer for Woodlawn United Community Development, brings around 20 years of public service experience and is committed to addressing community concerns. “Listening to constituents is vital,” he emphasized, believing communities inherently know what they need. In the other council races, Clinton Woods (District 1), Crystal Smitherman (District 6), and Wardine Alexander (District 7) all retained their positions. Upcoming runoffs will occur in Districts 4, 8, and 9, with elections set for October 7.
